Yesterday morning, I took the dogs out for their morning walk and saw a hint of red in the garden where I had recently planted the cast iron plants. Sure enough, the tops of a couple of spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) were peaking through the greenery. August is always the hottest month in my state, so a hint of fall is extremely welcome.
The signs of fall
There are always three signs of early fall here in Mississippi:
- The temperature finally drops below 93 degrees (seriously!)
- The spider lilies start to bloom
- My hair is no longer frizzy and ill-behaved from the humidity
Ok, maybe that last one is just a personal sign of fall, but it’s a favorite of mine!
This morning there are a couple more spider lilies blooming and I noticed the pineapple sage has started blooming as well. It reblooms in the fall so that there is an abundance of red colors in the garden this season. The temperature this morning was a crisp 54 degrees and tomorrows high is expected to be in the high 70’s. Fall is here! Now let’s just hope it stays, though I see 90’s in my future. It’s Mississippi, after all.
