I can not tell you how much I appreciate having this sprinkler system installed in my vegetable beds. All I have to do is hook up a hose and set a timer. It has been quite the time-saver for me and due to its customizable shape, I am not wasting water on things I don’t mean to water.
As much as I love having a large vegetable garden, I do not enjoy watering. Standing there with a hose or even setting up a sprinkler that I have to move around is definitely not my favorite thing to do.
It has reached the hot part of summer already in the South. The days are around 94 and we haven’t had rain in two weeks. During these hot days, I do rotate watering days for my vegetable plants, but I tend to leave the flowers and shrubs to fend for themselves (unless it’s something I recently transplanted).

Here’s a video I took this weekend after we installed a new system at my parents’ vegetable garden. It took less than 30 minutes and it will save tons of time spent watering.

PROS
- Saves time spent watering
- Covers a large area
- Easy to add a timer
- Adjustable to your garden shape and size
- Sprinkler height is adjustable
- It is affordable

- It’s easy to install – took me about 15 minutes to install my second one (after having installed the first one)
CONS
- Dirt and debris occasionally gets in the line which you have to clean out or the sprinklers won’t spray or spray in odd directions. You’ll have to take apart the sprinkler heads and clean out the debris somewhat regularly if you hook and unhook a hose to this system. To solve the problem, put a screen at the attachment end of this system. It will keep out the debris.
- You can not change locations of sprinklers easily after installation (Don’t create new holes!)
- You can’t get extra sprinklers
- The tubing is pretty rigid – if you’re not careful it will kink. And it’s pretty long. You’ll need to double it up for smaller beds (unless you trim it). Kinking may permanently damage the house if it causes a severe crease. It may even crack at this point, so be careful not to kink the hosing.
Installation
This system covers up to 600 square feet. I find it works really well in a smaller space, ensuring things are well-watered. I have used it in several of my rectangular raised beds. I like that I can have adjustable heights at each of the sprinkler heads, depending on the vegetation around it.
The rubber hose is coiled up in the box, so you must uncoil it and set it in the sun to allow the kinks to be taken out of it. Weigh down the ends with a couple of bricks or heavy pots for about 15 minutes in the direct sun.
Then you layout the rubber hose in the location that you wish it to be placed. Then take the sprinkler spikes (there are 5) and figure out where you would like to place them to evenly disperse water in your garden. Play with the arrangement a bit before you attach them to the hose, because they pierce the hose, making it much harder to change your mind!
Once you have figured out where you want to place your spikes, go ahead and screw them into the rubber hose – allowing them to pierce the hose. Then install the height adjustment pieces (risers), if you so desire. You can use these if you are watering tall plants that might obstruct the water flow or if you need the water to travel a bit further.
You can also snap on “deflectors” which allow your sprinkler to convert from a full-direction sprayer to only a one-direction sprayer. This is best used if you put your sprinklers at the edge of a bed and only want the water to spray into the bed rather than all around the sprinkler head. Otherwise, you can just put the sprinklers through the middle of the bed and allow them to spray full direction.

Additional Comments and Notes
The main thing I would add to this kit is a hose screen. This would keep debris from entering the line, which can clog the sprinkler heads. It’s easy to get out, but I tend to notice it only when the water is on and then try to fix it at that time – resulting in me getting soaked. This would be a simple solution and prevent the problem in the first place.
It would also be nice if a few more sprinkler heads were included in the package. Five is a nice number, but two more would be even better.
Also, while it comes with a few stakes to help you secure the hose line to the ground, plan on getting some more sod staples to help you out.
Overall, it’s an easy to set up system that works relatively well with minor maintenance. I have three of these and they are still helping to reduce my watering time in my garden.
